Chaos in Delta: Governor Orders Crackdown as Urhobo, Itsekiri Youths Clash Violently

On Saturday, Warri, Delta State, was gripped by tension following a violent clash that erupted between Itsekiri and Urhobo youths at Okere Roundabout. The confrontation involved the firing of gunshots and mutual attacks, leading to several injuries and causing bystanders to flee for safety. A video obtained by SaharaReporters reportedly showed armed youths engaging in the conflict.

Eyewitnesses initially alleged that police officers present at the scene did not intervene in the violence. However, armed operatives of the Nigeria Police Force later stormed the scene and successfully dispersed the warring youths using tear gas. Several individuals reportedly sustained gunshot wounds during the clash and were subsequently rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear.

In immediate response to the escalating crisis, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori issued stern directives to security agents. Following a report on the violence, the governor ordered that anyone found with arms be apprehended or, if necessary, "neutralise[d]." This decisive action from the state government highlighted the gravity with which the situation was being treated.

A statement released on Saturday by Udoka Emmanuel Chika-dibie, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, conveyed a strong warning against any attempts to incite or fan the flames of tribal conflict in the Warri South Local Government Area. Governor Oborevwori emphatically stated that his administration would not condone unrest among the various tribes. He reiterated the state's unwavering determination to prevent a recurrence of the deadly 1999 crisis, pledging decisive steps to safeguard lives and restore calm to the troubled area.

The Governor's statement further emphasized his administration's stance: "I am compelled to use this platform to caution all those fanning the flames of conflict in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. The administration of His Excellency Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori will not condone unrest among the tribes in that local government. We have directed security agents to take firm action against anyone found culpable. We are still grappling with the aftermath of the 1999 crisis and cannot afford to relapse. We have also instructed security agents to apprehend or neutralise anyone seen with arms. As a state, our focus should be on achieving meaningful accomplishments, not fighting amongst ourselves. We will take all necessary measures to prevent the escalation of tension in the troubled area."
