Chaos Erupts: Gunshots and Acid Attack Mark Violent Youth Clashes in Ekumfi

The Central Region of Ghana has recently experienced a series of violent clashes between youth from Ekumfi Eyisam and Mankesim/Mankessim Edumadze, resulting in multiple injuries and raising significant concerns about community safety and security during social gatherings. These confrontations underscore a growing problem of sporadic violence linked to festive and social events along the coastline.

One such incident escalated following a beach rave in Saltpond. Tensions initially arose from an altercation between two individuals from the rival communities during the event. Matters took a grave turn when a member of the Eyisam community was allegedly subjected to a brutal assault. This incident reportedly triggered fierce reprisal attacks, with youth from Ekumfi Eyisam mobilizing and storming the Edumadze community. During these chaotic scenes, gunshots were fired, injuring at least one person who received treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. Another individual was reportedly injured in an acid attack, though their whereabouts remained unknown at the time of reporting. Residents described a highly tense situation as fear gripped both communities, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures.

A separate incident, confirmed by the Central Regional Police Command, occurred on Friday, January 3, 2026, at about 7:20 pm, near a Shell fuel station in Mankessim. The police received a distress call reporting a fight involving a group of young men. Investigations revealed that earlier that day, while attending a wedding in Mankessim, youth from Eyisam learned that one of their members had been attacked and beaten at the Accra lorry station by some Mankessim youth. Following the wedding, the Eyisam youth decided to confront the alleged aggressor. They identified and pursued an individual into a shop near the Shell fuel station, where a glass door was broken during their attempt to apprehend the suspect. This led to a confrontation with Mankessim area boys, and both sides began pelting stones at each other.

In both instances, police intervention was crucial in restoring calm. In the Shell fuel station incident, the Mankessim night patrol team was dispatched immediately, causing the youth to flee upon their arrival, though no arrests were made at the scene. One victim from this clash, identified as Wisdom, was rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment. Following the initial beach rave-related clash, community leaders played a vital role in intervening and helping to restore peace. Police have since monitored the areas to prevent further disturbances, and investigations are ongoing into the Mankessim incident.

These violent encounters have prompted renewed calls for robust security measures and effective conflict-resolution mechanisms at the community level. The recurrence of such incidents during social gatherings emphasizes the urgent need for authorities and local leaders to work collaboratively to ensure public safety and foster peaceful coexistence between communities in the Central Region.
