Chaos and Controversy: 'The Witcher' Season 4 Nears Release, Plagued by Henry Cavill's Shadow and Disturbing Rumors

Netflix's highly anticipated fourth season of The Witcher is stirring significant discussion and concern among its dedicated fanbase, primarily due to the departure of star Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia and the introduction of Liam Hemsworth in the iconic role. While Cavill's exit already left many fans feeling a profound loss, a new report suggests an even more divisive decision awaits: a rumored "mini-musical" episode.
According to reports, Season 4 is set to feature a musical number involving the beloved bard, Jaskier, during a campfire scene. This particular scene is said to be inspired by Baptism of Fire, the third book in Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga, where Geralt, Jaskier, Milva, Cahir, and Regis share a quiet moment of camaraderie. However, the adaptation reportedly expands this into an entire episode, complete with song, dance, and the unexpected appearance of Jaskier’s rival, Valdo Marx, joining the chorus.
While music has always been an integral part of The Witcher's charm – evidenced by the viral success of "Toss a Coin to Your Witcher" – a full-fledged musical episode is perceived differently. Many fans fear this stylistic choice deviates too far from Sapkowski’s grim fantasy source material. This concern is amplified by Liam Hemsworth stepping into Geralt's shoes, a transition already under intense scrutiny. Audiences, already skeptical about Cavill’s absence, might view a campy musical interlude as further proof the show is veering off course, potentially making Hemsworth's challenge of winning over fans even harder.
Despite these brewing controversies, Netflix is pushing forward aggressively. The streamer has confirmed that The Witcher Season 4 is in post-production and is slated to debut before the end of 2025, with late October or early November being the most likely premiere window. Specifically, October 30 has been rumored as a potential release date. Further solidifying this timeline, Liam Hemsworth is reportedly booked for an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show on October 28, an event likely aimed at promoting the new season.
Fans can still expect to see familiar faces alongside Hemsworth, including Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Production for Season 5 is also reportedly nearing completion, indicating Netflix's commitment to swiftly concluding the saga without lengthy gaps between installments. Promotional efforts, including the first trailer, are expected to ramp up one to two months prior to the premiere date.
The show's journey has been a mixed bag in terms of critical and audience reception. While critics were mildly positive on Season 3, giving it a Certified Fresh 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, audience sentiment was starkly different, resulting in a Rotten 19% on the Popcornmeter—the lowest rating for the series. This downward trend began after Season 1, which earned a respectable 88% from audiences. Season 2 saw a dip to a Rotten 54% from fans, despite a strong 95% from critics. Importantly, fan discontent in later seasons was never attributed to Henry Cavill’s performance, underscoring the immense pressure on Liam Hemsworth to not only fill big shoes but also navigate the show's evolving creative direction.
