Cavaliers Secure Kenny Atkinson as Head Coach, Sources Confirm!

Kenny Atkinson is set to return as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for the upcoming season, sources confirmed to ESPN. This decision comes despite the team's recent exit from the playoffs, where they were swept by the New York Knicks in the conference finals. This marked the furthest the Cavaliers have advanced in the postseason since 2018, and the furthest without LeBron James on the roster since 1992.

Despite the lopsided nature of the conference finals series, where each game was decided by double digits, support for Atkinson remains robust among key officials within the Cavaliers organization. Following their elimination, star players Donovan Mitchell and James Harden publicly voiced their strong backing for their coach.

"It's just hilarious," Mitchell stated after the series. "We've done something that we haven't done since 2018. There's going to be criticism everywhere on Kenny, but why?... We did it, but we did it with Kenny. We didn't just go out there and coach ourselves. I love Kenny. We love Kenny. We ride with Kenny and ultimately that's all that matters." Harden echoed this sentiment, calling Atkinson an "ultimate players coach" who understands his team and helped him acclimate quickly to the system.

Atkinson, who inked a five-year deal with the Cavaliers in 2024, will be entering his third season at the helm. Over his first two regular seasons, he has compiled an impressive record of 116-48, boasting a .707 winning percentage. Before Atkinson's arrival, Cleveland had fired J.B. Bickerstaff after the 2023-24 season following a conference semifinals exit, bringing in Atkinson with the explicit goal of deeper playoff runs.

In his inaugural season, Atkinson led the Cavaliers to 64 wins and earned Coach of the Year honors, though the team again fell in the second round. This season, despite a challenging start at 17-16 and a mid-season roster shake-up with the acquisition of James Harden, Cleveland successfully navigated two grueling seven-game series in the first two rounds to reach the conference finals. Atkinson characterized the season as a success, noting, "That was the task, right? Take another step. Knicks were in the conference finals last year. There are barriers. We jumped a barrier that we were stuck on."

The coach did face scrutiny during the conference finals, particularly after the Cavaliers squandered a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter of Game 1. Furthermore, his comments about how the Cavaliers had "analytically" won two out of three games, referencing expected shot quality metrics, became a subject of social media ridicule outside the locker room. However, inside the organization, support for Atkinson remained unwavering.

While Atkinson expressed confidence in himself and the team, and trust in the front office's collaborative approach to roster construction, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert tweeted that the team is "nowhere near where we need to be." This suggests that the organization is poised to be "opportunistic this summer with potential roster moves" in their ongoing pursuit of an NBA championship.
