The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has paid tribute to late Pope Francis, describing him as a leader who championed ecumenism and interfaith dialogue.

He noted that the late Pontiff fostered greater understanding and cooperation between different Christian denominations and faith communities, promoting a culture of dialogue and mutual respect.

Ugorji, in a statement, observed that the reign of Pope Francis was characterised by his tireless advocacy for the marginalised and vulnerable, emphasizing the importance of serving the poor and promoting social justice.

He stated that Pope Francis implemented significant reforms within the Church, including changes to the liturgical books and the establishment of new departments in the Vatican Office.

According to him, Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si’ highlighted the urgent need for environmental protection and sustainable living, sparking global discussions on climate change and care for creation.

Ugorji added that throughout his papacy, Pope Francis was revered for his humility, compassion, and commitment to serving others. His legacy will continue to inspire millions around the world.

He noted that the Pope’s funeral will follow the updated liturgical book for papal funeral rites, which he approved in April 2024, adding that the simplified and solemn ceremony will reflect his desire for a more austere and faith-focused celebration.

Ugorji urged all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for the happy repose of Pope Francis and for the Catholic Church at this period.

The Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church, on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. He passed away at about 7:35 AM at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

This brings an end to a pontificate which commenced on March 13, 2013, when he was elected to succeed Pope Benedict XVI, who had resigned on February 28, 2013.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, as he was born, chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
