Carl Tamayo and LG Sakers Win KBL Title

Carl Tamayo and the Changwon LG Sakers emerged victorious against the Seoul SK Knights in Game 7 of the KBL Finals, securing a 62-58 win and the championship. This triumph marks a significant milestone for both Tamayo and the city of Changwon. For Changwon, it's their first KBL championship since joining the league in 1997. For Tamayo, it signifies his status as the first Filipino import to clinch titles in both the Japanese B.League and the KBL.

Tamayo previously won a B.League title in 2023 with the Ryukyu Golden Kings, though he had limited playing time. His role with the LG Sakers was significantly more prominent, earning him a third-round MVP award and a spot in the league’s Best 5. In the crucial Game 7, Tamayo delivered a double-double performance with 12 points and 10 rebounds, along with two steals and two assists, contributing significantly to the Sakers' victory. Heo Il-Young, named Finals MVP, supported Tamayo with 14 points, including four three-pointers.

The LG Sakers initially dominated the Finals, leading 3-0, with Tamayo playing a key role. In Game 2, he scored a series-best 27 points, positioning him as a frontrunner for the Finals MVP award. Despite Seoul SK Knights' comeback attempt, Changwon secured the win, with Kim Jae-hyeon's clutch free throws sealing the victory. Kim finished with 12 points and three steals, while Heo Il-young led with 14 points and five rebounds. Yang Jun-seok added 11 points, compensating for Assem Marei's quiet night, who contributed 14 rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and one block.

Tamayo's recent victory with Changwon LG Sakers adds to his list of championships, including titles from his high school days at NU Nazareth School and his college career with the University of the Philippines. Juan Gomez de Liaño watched from the sidelines as his fellow UP alumnus, Tamayo, celebrated the win. Jameel Warney led Seoul with 11 points and 15 rebounds in their defeat.
