Cardano Achieves Major Breakthrough: Biggest Upgrade in Years Reaches Milestone

Cardano's foundational consensus mechanism, Ouroboros, is poised for a significant performance enhancement as its highly anticipated upgrade, Leios, has transitioned into the active engineering phase. This crucial development marks a major step towards realizing a projected 10,000 transactions-per-second (TPS) throughput for the Cardano (ADA) blockchain, dramatically increasing its scalability and efficiency.

The profound upgrade, known as Ouroboros Leios, officially moved from research and development into active engineering, a milestone reported by Input Output Global, a prominent observer and developer within the Cardano ecosystem. The project’s handover from Input | Output Research (IOR) to Input | Output Engineering (IOE) was formalized in an inaugural meeting in September, signaling Leios's progression from theoretical research to practical implementation.

This transition was facilitated by the finalization of key design elements critical for Cardano's post-Leios performance. Specifically, the system will now reapply certified endorsement blocks by skipping redundant checks, which significantly reduces the workload required for rebuilding. Engineering teams are currently engaged in extensive benchmarking across network and ledger-scale prototypes to precisely quantify these performance gains and update operational guidance accordingly. Input Output Global emphasized that the overarching objective of Leios remains the achievement of higher throughput for blockchain transactions, with all product sizing and scope adjustments to be managed transparently and in coordination with relevant governance bodies.

Leios is heralded as a transformative upgrade for Cardano (ADA), promising to be a game-changer in terms of speed, overall performance, and resource-efficiency. Once activated, it will introduce a sophisticated multilayered architecture designed to optimize transaction processing. This innovative design will allow for multiple operations to be conducted concurrently, thereby enhancing the network's capacity.

A core innovation of Leios involves the separation of the work related to creating input blocks (IBs) from the subsequent work of validating and linking these with endorser blocks (EBs). This architectural division effectively creates "express lanes" for transactions, streamlining the entire process, accelerating transaction finality, and ultimately paving the way for the ambitious target of 10,000 TPS on the Cardano blockchain.
