Call for Deregistration of Gachagua's DCP Party

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei is calling for the deregistration of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), claiming it fails to meet the requirements of a national party. Cherargei stated that the DCP does not have the required 24 functional offices across the nation, as stipulated by the Political Parties Act. He has urged the Registrar of Political Parties to carefully review the party's registration.

Cherargei also criticized the DCP's executive structure, arguing that it does not reflect Kenya's diversity in terms of regional balance, gender, and youth representation. He emphasized the importance of adhering to Article 10 of the constitution, which outlines principles of good governance. The senator believes that the Registrar of Political Parties should remain vigilant to prevent the promotion of tribalism through regional parties.

According to Cherargei, only the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Raila Odinga’s ODM meet the criteria of national political outfits. He expressed disappointment that Gachagua's DCP does not include Gen Z representatives in its leadership, despite claims of supporting the youth. Cherargei made these remarks during a Senate fact-finding mission in Uasin Gishu County.

Cherargei alleges that the DCP is among several parties hastily created to undermine President William Ruto's chances of securing a second term. He also stated that the opposition parties are too fragmented to form a coalition against Ruto in the 2027 elections. He noted that figures like Fred Matiang'i, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Martha Karua each have their own political parties, making it difficult for them to unite behind a single candidate. Cherargei believes that the opposition lacks new leadership and the capacity to challenge Ruto's position.
