CAF Drops the Hammer! Algeria Faces Severe Sanctions After AFCON Brawl with Nigeria
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed significant sanctions on Algeria following a post-match altercation during their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match against Nigeria. The incident occurred after Nigeria's Super Eagles secured a convincing 2-0 victory over the North African team on January 10, advancing to the AFCON 2025 semifinals.
This match was notable for the Super Eagles' dominant performance, during which they could have scored more goals, while Algeria struggled to test Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, managing their first goal attempt only in the second half.
The Algerians, visibly frustrated by the result, escalated the situation into a physical confrontation after the final whistle. Several players and staff members attempted to attack the match officials and had to be restrained by stewards, who eventually escorted the referees to safety. Reports indicated specific altercations, including Luca Zidane fighting with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Algerian staff targeting the refereeing body.
Following an investigation into the incident, CAF took a firm stance. The continental governing body sanctioned the Algerian Football Federation with a substantial $100,000 fine, reflecting the seriousness of the post-match events and the lack of sportsmanship displayed.
In addition to the federation's fine, individual players also received disciplinary action. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane was handed a two-match suspension. Defender Rafik Belghali received a four-game ban, with two of these matches to be served during Algeria's qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations later this year. These bans will make both players unavailable for key upcoming fixtures.
Notably, despite some Super Eagles players being in the vicinity of the scuffle, none were found guilty of any punishable offense, and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) was not subjected to any fines or sanctions. The 2025 AFCON was marked by various dramatic incidents and erring parties, with even the host nation, Morocco, facing issues. CAF is expected to continue punishing all offenders across the tournament to ensure fair play and prevent setting negative precedents in African football.
