Speaking on state television, the country's leader, Traoré, affirmed that the nation's immediate focus is not on elections but rather on the crucial task of rebuilding the state. These remarks follow several months after his junta implemented a significant political change, dissolving all political parties in January 2026 and subsequently transferring their assets directly to the state. Traoré, who is 36 years old and ascended to power through a coup in 2022, has consistently postponed electoral processes and prolonged military governance. He attributes these delays to the persistent threat of jihadist violence plaguing the region.
