Breaking: Police Shake-Up! IGP Appoints New Force PRO, Adejobi Takes New Role

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has officially appointed Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Benjamin Hundeyin as the new Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO). This significant announcement was made by the outgoing FPRO, Deputy Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, through a statement and a post on the Nigerian Police Force’s official X page.

Mr. Hundeyin's appointment comes as he transitions from his role as the spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, a position he held since March 2022. He succeeds Mr. Adejobi, who has been redeployed as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in Delta State. Mr. Adejobi's tenure as Force PRO, which began in 2022 and lasted approximately three and a half years, was marked by various controversies, including notable clashes with the civil society community and remarks that reportedly justified some unlawful arrests of activists by the police.

IGP Egbetokun has issued a clear directive to Mr. Hundeyin, charging him to "leverage on his communications and security experience to bolster the Force’s Public Relations activities and ensure continuous positive relations with the public." This mandate underscores the critical importance of effective public engagement and transparent communication for the Nigerian Police Force.

Mr. Hundeyin brings a wealth of both academic qualifications and practical experience to his new, demanding role. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Language from Lagos State University and a Master’s degree in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan. His professional development includes specialized training in Civil-Military Coordination, which he received at the Nigerian Army’s leadership institute in Jaji, also identified as the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Training Centre in Kaduna State.

His extensive background also features international exposure, notably as part of Nigeria’s contingent to the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in Sudan in 2020. Within the Nigerian Police Force, Mr. Hundeyin has served at the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Lagos and within the Public Relations Department of the Force Headquarters in Abuja, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of police operations and strategic communication at various organizational levels.

Furthermore, Mr. Hundeyin is an active and recognized member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), the International Public Relations Association (IPRA), and the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPMN/CIPM). These affiliations highlight his dedication to upholding professional standards and pursuing continuous development in the fields of public relations and personnel management.
