Brandon Randolph Discusses Relationship with Carsen Edwards

Brandon Randolph, a rookie for RASTA Vechta, has had an exceptional season in Germany. After a long G-League career, including a stint with the Austin Spurs where he expressed his passion for food, Randolph traveled to Paris during a FIBA break and was surprised by escargot, which he loved. He equates this surprise to his own game, stating, "I think I’m a surprise on the court. I’m better than what you expected."

At 27, Randolph is performing at a high level in his first professional overseas experience, contributing significantly to RASTA Vechta. Despite the usual adjustment period for players transitioning from the States to Europe, Randolph is a strong MVP candidate in the German Bundesliga. He acknowledges the differences in physicality, pace, court size, and rules but has adapted well with the help of Martin Schiller.

Schiller, who has coached in both Europe and the States, has been instrumental in Randolph's development. Randolph notes, "Martin Schiller has been constantly helping me, he’s a really good teacher. I started off a little rough, but his wanting to teach me has really helped." Schiller's experience with the Salt Lake City Stars, Zalgiris Kaunas, and Zaragoza provides valuable guidance to Randolph.

RASTA Vechta faced challenges in the Basketball Champions League, where they were eliminated with a 1-5 record. However, Randolph averaged 15.3 points and 4.5 rebounds, shooting efficiently from the field and the free-throw line. He recognizes the shift in mindset required to compete in Europe, focusing on team success rather than individual aspirations of reaching the NBA.

Germany was Randolph's primary target for playing overseas. He felt it was time to explore new opportunities after a long G-League tenure. "Germany was the main country I was looking at when coming overseas. I felt like I had a long stint in the G-League, and it was time to branch out," he said. He appreciates the competitive nature of the German league, highlighting teams like Bayern Munich and ALBA Berlin.

Randolph is also enjoying reconnecting with Carsen Edwards, another American player in the German Bundesliga. They have been competing against each other since they were young, with Randolph saying, "Growing up, since I basically started travelling around the US to play basketball, around 10-11-12 years old, I’ve been playing against Carsen [Edwards]." Their friendly rivalry continues in Germany.

Looking ahead, Randolph aims to play at the highest level possible, whether in the States or Europe. He aspires to compete in the EuroLeague, stating, "My goals are to be at the highest level possible... I think I definitely deserve to have a shot at the EuroLeague and prove myself there." He emphasizes his abilities on both offense and defense and is focused on improving his mental strength and consistency.

Randolph feels he has been underestimated throughout his career, using it as motivation to improve. "I feel like I’ve been under the radar of my whole life," he said. He is determined to prove his doubters wrong and establish himself in the basketball world.

With RASTA Vechta vying for a spot in the German postseason and Randolph showcasing his talent in European basketball, his first campaign away from the G-League has been a positive experience. He is focused on continuing to improve and make a name for himself in Europe.
