Chelsea Defender Expresses Intent to Decide on Playing for Nigeria

Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo is at a pivotal moment in his career, having recently celebrated a significant European triumph with his new club and now facing an important decision regarding his international allegiance. The former England U19 international, who recently won the 2024/25 UEFA Europa Conference League with Chelsea, has indicated that he will soon decide which country he will represent at the senior level, with both England and Nigeria as potential options.
Adarabioyo's move to Chelsea from Fulham on a free transfer, where he signed a four-year contract, has already yielded silverware. Chelsea secured the UEFA Europa Conference League title by defeating Real Betis 4-1 in a thrilling final held in Wroclaw, Poland, on Wednesday, May 28. Despite Real Betis taking an early lead in the second half through Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, Chelsea mounted a remarkable comeback. Goals from Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson, both assisted by Cole Palmer, turned the tide, with Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo adding further goals to seal the victory and end Chelsea's season on a high.
Regarding his international future, the 27-year-old defender has clarified his position amidst circulating reports. Adarabioyo stated that he never turned down an invitation from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), explaining that past interviews were a misinterpretation of his words. He emphasized that during his final season at Fulham, his priority was settling into the club, which was why discussions about representing Nigeria did not advance significantly. Now, in his first year at Chelsea, he has reiterated his focus on club football but acknowledged that the time for a definitive decision on his international career is approaching. "I think now is going to be the time I need to make a decision," he remarked.
The interest from Nigeria is not new, as the previous leadership of the NFF had reportedly met with Adarabioyo in the past. The Super Eagles, currently under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, are undergoing structural changes, which might see experienced defenders like Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong contending for their places, potentially opening opportunities for new talent. Adarabioyo is yet to receive a senior national call-up from England.
Following the Conference League final, Adarabioyo was quick to praise his teammate Cole Palmer for his instrumental role in Chelsea's comeback. "If you saw what he did today, it was crazy, to be honest. Two great goals and it completely changed the game. Yeah, that's what he does more," Adarabioyo commented, highlighting Palmer's brilliance.
Adarabioyo has also openly addressed his Nigerian roots, a topic that has sparked debate about a potential switch of allegiance. He acknowledged the significant influence of his older brothers, Gbolahan and Fisayo, in shaping his football career. Notably, Fisayo Adarabioyo, also a product of Manchester City’s academy like Tosin, had previously received a call-up to Nigeria’s U23 training camp in preparation for the 2016 Olympics, underscoring the family's connection to Nigerian football.
