Nigeria Captain Ahmed Musa Departs Super Eagles Camp

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has departed the Nigerian national team's camp in London, returning to Nigeria, and will consequently miss the upcoming 2025 Unity Cup final against Jamaica. The final is scheduled for Saturday, May 31st, at the GTech Stadium. Musa, a forward for Kano Pillars, had only recently made his return to the Super Eagles after an 18-month absence, featuring in the 2-1 win over Ghana that secured their place in the final.

The primary reason for Musa's early departure from the squad is personal, as he is preparing for his forthcoming wedding. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 1st in Kaduna. According to reports from OwnGoal Nigeria, his exit was sanctioned by the Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, allowing Musa the necessary time for his wedding preparations given the proximity of the final on May 31st.

Musa's appearance in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Ghana in the Unity Cup semi-final marked his first cap for the national team in over a year and a half. He entered the match as a substitute in the 60th minute, contributing to the team's hard-fought win that secured their place in the final against the Raggae Boyz. His return was seen as a significant boost for the squad, especially after being sidelined from national team action since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 32-year-old forward's journey back to the national team followed a period of addressing fitness concerns, which arose after his departure from Turkish side Sivasspor. Musa rejoined Kano Pillars in October 2023 and has since become a vital player in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). His impressive form, including 10 goals and providing two assists in 23 appearances, earned him a recall to the Super Eagles for the Unity Cup tournament.

As the Super Eagles prepare for the Unity Cup final against Jamaica, other team members were also noted as absent from Friday's training session. According to 21st Century Chronicle, Wilfred Ndidi, Cyriel Dessers, and Semilore Ajayi all missed the session. Meanwhile, players who had extensive game time against Ghana were placed on light recovery drills. Interestingly, Benjamin Fredrick of English Premier League side Brentford, who was not originally part of the squad, was spotted at the training ground participating in tactical sessions led by coach Chelle, hinting at a potential late inclusion or future involvement.

Looking ahead, coach Eric Chelle will decide on Musa’s future involvement with the national team in the coming months, particularly with World Cup qualifiers on the horizon in September. Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Musa had embraced his leadership role upon his arrival in London on Monday, May 26, alongside players from the NPFL and Remo Stars manager Daniel Ogunmodede, for the four-nation tournament. He served as a key link between the team and Nigerians, urging fans to throw their full support behind the team as they prepared to face their opponents.
