Nigeria Defeats Jamaica to Win 2025 Unity Cup

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were crowned champions of the 2025 Unity Cup after a hard-fought victory over Jamaica's Reggae Boyz. The final, held on Friday evening, May 31, 2025, concluded 5-4 in Nigeria's favor following a penalty shootout, after the match ended in a 2-2 draw during regulation time. This triumph marked the first trophy for Nigeria under coach Eric Chelle and the nation's third Unity Cup title, having previously won in 2004 and also successfully defended their title from the immediately preceding edition of this tournament series.
The decisive match took place at the Gtech Community Stadium, also known as Brentford FC Stadium, in Brentford, London. Nigeria reached the final by defeating West African rivals Ghana 2-1 in the semi-final, while Jamaica had overcome Trinidad and Tobago to secure their spot in the championship game. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle made a few changes to the squad that had triumphed in the semi-final, and also handed debuts to Benjamin Frederick and Felix Agu during the competition.
Nigeria began the match assertively, launching attacks from the first minute and dominating the midfield with precise passing. Their early pressure paid off in the 9th minute when Nantes forward Moses Simon found the net. Simon was well-positioned in the box to finish a low cross from Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers, who provided the assist from the right wing, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead. However, the advantage was short-lived. Just two to three minutes later, around the 11th minute, Jamaica equalised through Kaheim Dixon. Dixon capitalized on a defensive lapse, slotting the ball into an empty net from a low cross that evaded the Nigerian defense, including goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, after Remo Stars defender Sodiq Ismaila reportedly lost his marker. Despite continued pressure from the Super Eagles, the first half concluded with the score level at 1-1.
Upon resumption for the second half, Nigeria intensified their efforts to break the deadlock. Their persistence was rewarded in the 53rd or 54th minute when AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze, playing effectively in an improvised number 10 role, restored Nigeria's lead. Chukwueze demonstrated skill by holding off three Jamaican players before unleashing a powerful low, left-footed shot into the far corner of the goal, making it 2-1. One account detailed the build-up involving Sodiq Ismaila initiating an attack from the left, passing to Nathan Tella, who then set up Chukwueze. However, the Reggae Boyz responded once more. In the 63rd or 64th minute, Jon Russell scored Jamaica's second equalizer. An inviting cross, reportedly from the left wing, exploited a gap in Nigeria’s defense, catching defenders off guard and allowing Russell to slot the ball past a helpless Nwabali, leveling the score at 2-2. Nigeria had opportunities to win in regulation, with one substitute reportedly wasting three clear chances in the final 10 minutes. In the 85th minute, Cyriel Dessers was substituted for Getafe midfielder Uche Chrisantus, a strategic move by Chelle ahead of a potential penalty shootout.
With no further goals in regulation time, the final went directly to a penalty shootout to decide the winner. Nigeria demonstrated composure from the spot, successfully converting all five of their penalties. Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Tolu Arokodare, and Bruno Onyemaechi all scored, before Uche Chrisantus, making his debut for the Super Eagles, stepped up to score the decisive fifth penalty. For Jamaica, Dwayne Atkinson's kick unfortunately hit the crossbar, resulting in their only miss of the shootout, which concluded 5-4 in Nigeria's favour.
Following the victory, coach Eric Chelle, formerly the Mali handler, expressed that winning the Unity Cup was an advantageous step for Nigeria. He acknowledged Jamaica as a strong opponent and reiterated that the Nigerian national team is a work in progress, assuring fans that positive results would continue to manifest. With the Unity Cup secured, Chelle and the Super Eagles now shift their focus to the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualification matches scheduled for September.
