Brad Pitt Shocks Fans: Cliff Booth Returns in Surprise 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Sequel!

Viewers were treated to a surprising first look at the highly anticipated sequel, "The Adventures of Cliff Booth," during Super Bowl LIX. This new film serves as a follow-up to Quentin Tarantino's 2019 blockbuster, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," and will center on Brad Pitt's character, Cliff Booth, the stuntman, handyman, and alleged wife-murderer. The story is set to unfold in mid-century Los Angeles, with a planned release later this year.

The Super Bowl trailer revealed Cliff Booth embarking on a new escapade, now decoupled from his former partner Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the previous film. In this new adventure, Cliff finds a new partner in crime, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki. While the exact details of their activities remain unspecified, Rick Dalton is confident it's a "good story." Interestingly, Netflix took measures to sanitize the trailer for a wider audience during the Super Bowl broadcast, censoring elements like substance use, cursing, and nudity with faux film scratches. This stylistic choice might serve as a subtle homage to Pitt's role as rogue projectionist Tyler Durden in "Fight Club," a film also helmed by David Fincher, who is directing "The Adventures of Cliff Booth." Despite the censorship, the trailer still promises excellent 1970s action, underscored by a cover of the iconic Peter Gunn theme.

Unlike its predecessor, which was both written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, "The Adventures of Cliff Booth" sees Tarantino solely in a writing capacity, with David Fincher taking the director's chair. This marks a significant moment as it's the first script Tarantino has entrusted to another director since 1996's crime horror thriller "From Dusk Till Dawn." From the original cast, only one character is slated to return: James Stacy, the real-life Western TV star, who was previously played by Timothy Olyphant. In addition to Brad Pitt, Timothy Olyphant, and Elizabeth Debicki, the cast boasts an impressive lineup including Scott Caan, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carla Gugino, Holt McCallany, and Peter Weller.

The film is presumed to pick up after the events of "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," where Cliff's quick thinking famously altered history by preventing the infamous Manson Murders. "The Adventures of Cliff Booth" is reportedly a monumental undertaking, with Fincher and Tarantino's most expensive budget to date, exceeding $200 million USD. The predecessor, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," proved to be a massive success for Tarantino, grossing $392 million globally on a $96 million budget, earning critical acclaim, and securing a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Brad Pitt. The film is slated for release in select theaters and will also be available on Netflix later this year.
