Box Office Shakes Up: 'Super Mario Galaxy' Soars While 'You, Me & Tuscany' Stumbles on Opening Day

The North American box office continued to see strong performances from a mix of animated blockbusters and new releases, with Universal and Illumination's "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" once again leading the pack. In its second weekend, the animated sequel added an impressive $17.5 million on Friday, despite a projected 48% drop from its opening weekend. By Sunday, "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" is anticipated to reach $68.9 million domestically for the weekend, pushing its total domestic earnings to an estimated $308 million.
While still a significant earner, "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" is performing below its predecessor, 2023’s "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which garnered $92.3 million domestically in its second weekend. The earlier film benefited from strong word of mouth, boasting an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the unique appeal of launching a new film franchise, factors that the sequel must contend without. Nevertheless, its current performance is still considered a robust showing.
This weekend also introduced a new romantic comedy, "You, Me & Tuscany," from Universal, which secured fourth place on Friday with $3.1 million from approximately 3,000 theaters domestically. The film is expected to accumulate around $8.3 million in North America by Sunday. "You, Me & Tuscany" features Halle Bailey as Anna, a woman who assumes the identity of a villa owner's fiancée to stay in an unattended Tuscan property. Her fabricated identity begins to unravel as she develops a romance with the owner's cousin, portrayed by Regé-Jean Page. The cast also includes Marco Calvani, Aziza Scott, Isabella Ferrari, and Lorenzo de Moor, with Kat Coiro directing from a script by Ryan and Kristin Engle.
In second place on Friday was the sci-fi epic "Project Hail Mary," which earned $6.8 million domestically. The film is demonstrating remarkable staying power, projected to take in $26 million by Sunday, indicating a mere 18% drop in its performance. After four weekends in theaters, "Project Hail Mary" is on track to collect a substantial $258 million at the North American box office.
A24’s "The Drama" claimed third place on Friday, adding an estimated $2.8 million domestically in its second weekend. Following a strong opening last weekend with $14 million, the film is forecast to bring in an additional $9.1 million by Sunday. This "rug-pull rom-com" stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson under the direction of Kristoffer Borgli, depicting a soon-to-be-married couple whose relationship dramatically implodes after a shocking revelation.
Rounding out the top five was Disney and Pixar’s animated adventure "Hoopers," which grossed $1.1 million on Friday domestically. This film is expected to add approximately $4 million by Sunday, pushing its total North American earnings to a projected $157 million after four weeks of release.
