Box Office King: 'The Odyssey' Crushes Records to Become Biggest R-Rated Movie Ever!

Christopher Nolan's cinematic epic, "The Odyssey," has officially claimed the title of the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, achieving a monumental $1.352 billion worldwide. This impressive feat sees it overtake the previous record holder, 2024’s "Deadpool & Wolverine," which grossed $1.338 billion.

Released in theaters on July 17, "The Odyssey" immediately made its mark with a formidable domestic debut of $123 million. Since its launch, the film has sustained its powerful box office performance, accumulating $516 million domestically and an additional $835 million internationally. This represents an extraordinary total for any film, especially for an R-rated sword-and-sandal adventure that runs for nearly three hours.

A significant portion of "The Odyssey's" success has been attributed to Imax screenings, which alone contributed $354 million in revenue. The movie is notably the fifth release this year and only the third R-rated film ever (joining the ranks of "Joker") to surpass the $1 billion mark in global revenue.

Ryan Reynolds, the creative force behind Marvel’s "Deadpool" franchise, publicly congratulated Nolan and his team on this historic achievement. He posted on X, "Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time."

Beyond its R-rated box office record, "The Odyssey" has also achieved several other significant milestones. It is now Christopher Nolan's biggest movie of all time, surpassing his 2012 hit, "The Dark Knight Rises," which earned $1.08 billion (not adjusted for inflation). Furthermore, it has become Imax’s highest-grossing release of all time, eclipsing 2009’s "Avatar," which previously held the record with $271 million (not adjusted for inflation).

The film itself is a grand adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, starring Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus, the resourceful king of Ithaca. It chronicles his arduous and perilous journey to return home following the Trojan War. Damon is supported by an acclaimed ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.
