Box Office Blitz: ‘Zootopia 2’ Shatters Records with Massive China Opening

"Zootopia 2" made an unprecedented splash at the China box office during the November 28–30 frame, recording a staggering RMB1.538 billion ($216.6 million) in its first two days. By Sunday, the Walt Disney sequel’s gross had climbed to RMB1.922 billion ($270.7 million), and with previews included, its estimated total reached $272 million, marking one of the most explosive launches in the market’s history. This debut positions "Zootopia 2" as the sixth-highest opening of all time in China across all films, and the second-biggest for a non-local title, trailing only "Avengers: Endgame." Furthermore, it stands as the highest animated opening ever in China for a non-local release.
In a remarkable feat, after just five days, "Zootopia 2" has already become the highest-grossing non-local animated film of all time in the Chinese market. It also now holds the title of the highest-grossing imported film since "Avengers: Endgame" (2019). The film is currently the fourth-highest animated film ever released in China, encompassing both local and foreign productions, having surpassed the original "Zootopia's" lifetime total of $236 million. The immense popularity of the property in China has surged, particularly following the opening of a Zootopia Land at the Shanghai Disneyland theme park. Adding to its achievements, the film delivered China’s ninth-highest single-day gross on Day 4, which also set a new record as the biggest single-day gross ever for an MPA title, exceeding "Avengers: Endgame." It now stands as the highest MPA opening of 2025.
Meanwhile, Aniplex’s "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle" secured the second spot, taking in $5.7 million and raising its cumulative total to $88 million. Directed by Sotozaki Haruo and produced by ufotable, this film adapts the climactic final arc of Gotouge Koyoharu’s hugely popular manga. It features returning voice cast members such as Hanae Natsuki, Kitō Akari, Shimono Hiro, and Matsuoka Yoshitsugu, following the Demon Slayer Corps’ crucial all-out assault on Kibutsuji Muzan’s stronghold to end the war between humans and demons.
Last weekend’s champion, Bi Gan’s "Resurrection," from Huace Pictures, experienced a slip to third place under the significant impact of the Disney blockbuster’s launch. It earned $3.4 million across its second weekend, bringing its cumulative total since its November 22 release to $25.1 million. "Resurrection," which stars Jackson Yee, Shu Qi, Mark Chao, Li Gengxi, Huang Jue, and Chen Yongzhong, explores a world where humanity has lost the ability to dream, with only one creature remaining entranced by fading dreamworld illusions. The narrative unfolds as a woman with the rare power to perceive these illusions chooses to enter the monster’s dreams, driven to uncover hidden truths within.
Lionsgate’s "Now You See Me: Now You Don’t" continued its run, adding $1.3 million to achieve a total of $37 million. Rounding out the top five was Qiangdian Media’s "My World Without Me," a drama directed by Tian Hairong and executive produced by Zhang Hanyu. The film, starring Tian alongside Tan Kai, Tian Haiyan, Shao Bing, and Tong Ruixin, depicts a woman’s struggle and confusion that ultimately lead to her transformation and rebirth. It debuted on November 27 with a two-day gross of $1 million, accumulating a $1.4 million cumulative total from its opening run.
Overall, China’s weekend box office reached a robust $229.7 million, a substantial increase from the previous weekend’s $44 million. This impressive performance has lifted the 2025 year-to-date total to $6.777 billion, marking a significant 19.8% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
