Box Office Battle: Mortal Kombat II & Devil Wears Prada 2 Clash for Top Spot!

The latest box office reports indicate a dynamic shift, with "Mortal Kombat II" delivering a decisive "fatality" to last week’s champion, "The Devil Wears Prada 2," by seizing the top spot on Friday. Warner Bros.' highly anticipated fighting game sequel garnered an impressive $17 million from 3,503 North American theaters on its opening Friday. While initial studio projections aimed for a softer $35 million domestically by Sunday, current forecasts suggest a stronger performance, pushing its opening weekend earnings closer to $41 million. This sequel boasts an $80 million production budget, a significant increase from its 2021 predecessor's $55 million. New Line spearheaded the production, with Warner Bros. handling distribution.
The original "Mortal Kombat", released in 2021, opened with $23 million and concluded its theatrical run with $84 million worldwide. However, it was part of the controversial Project Popcorn, which involved simultaneous releases on HBO Max and in theaters. With "Mortal Kombat II" and its conventional theatrical release, there is strong potential for it to surpass its predecessor's global earnings within a few weekends, especially given the added star power of Karl Urban as the iconic Johnny Cage and the current popularity of video game-to-film adaptations. Simon McQuoid returned to direct the sequel, with Jeremy Slater penning the script. The film follows Urban's Johnny Cage alongside Earth’s formidable fighting champions as they confront each other and the dark emperor Shao Kahn. The ensemble cast features Adeline Rudolph, Martyn Ford, Tati Gabrielle, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Josh Lawson, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Tadanobu Asano.
Falling to second place, "The Devil Wears Prada 2" secured $9.8 million domestically on its second Friday. 20th Century Studios projects the sequel to accumulate approximately $41 million through Sunday, though some industry rivals anticipate this figure could reach $50 million, influenced by Mother's Day turnout. If it achieves a $40 million weekend, "Prada 2"'s domestic earnings would near $141 million.
This weekend also saw other notable theatrical debuts. Amazon MGM's family-friendly mystery "The Sheep Detectives" and Paramount's concert film "Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)" both premiered on Friday. The Billie Eilish concert film, co-directed by the artist herself and "Avatar" director James Cameron, landed at No. 4, earning $4.5 million domestically from 2,613 theaters and is expected to reach about $8 million by Sunday. The film captures the 10-time Grammy winner's Manchester concerts. "The Sheep Detectives," an adaptation of Leonie Swann's novel "Three Bags Full," opened in fifth place with $4 million from 3,457 North American theaters, projected to make $14.8 million over the weekend. Directed by Kyle Balda with a screenplay by Craig Mazin, the PG whodunnit follows a shepherd who reads murder mysteries to his flock, only for the sheep to team up and solve his own murder after he's found dead. The film, produced with a $75 million budget, stars Hugh Jackman, Brett Goldstein, Patrick Stewart, Regina Hall, Bella Ramsey, Chris O’Dowd, Rhys Darby, Bryan Cranston, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Rounding out the top three, Lionsgate’s "Michael" demonstrated remarkable staying power, adding a stellar $8.8 million on its third Friday in theaters. It is projected to add $35 million by Sunday, representing a modest 36% drop from the previous weekend. This would bring "Michael's" domestic total to an impressive $238.8 million.
