Wike's fiery vow: Uzodimma's Senate presidency bid under threat!

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly declared his strong opposition to Imo State governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Hope Uzodimma, becoming the President of the Senate. This declaration was made during a television appearance in Abuja, where Wike addressed the resistance from some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors regarding the proposed 'Rainbow Coalition' ahead of the 2027 general elections. When contacted for a response, Governor Uzodimma, through his Commissioner for Information, Strategy and Public Orientation, Hon. Declan Emelumba, stated that he would not react to Wike's comments for "obvious reasons."

Wike alleged that the opposition to the Rainbow Coalition by certain APC governors stems from their ambition to influence the selection of National Assembly leaders following the 2027 elections. He claimed that these governors aim to install senators and House of Representatives members who would subsequently support their preferred candidates for top leadership positions in the National Assembly. Specifically, Wike linked this development to Governor Uzodimma's reported aspiration to become Senate President after his tenure as governor, emphasizing that his opposition was rooted in political considerations rather than personal animosity.

“I will never support a character like Hope Uzodimma to be Senate President of Nigeria. Everybody knows that,” Wike stated unequivocally. He elaborated that a prevailing fear among some politicians is that candidates who are denied tickets by the APC might seek alternative political platforms, win elections, and then refuse to back a preferred candidate for National Assembly leadership positions. This scenario, Wike suggested, could undermine the governors' influence.

The FCT minister clarified that his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid is distinct from the contests for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats. He drew a parallel to the 2023 general elections, recalling that the G5 governors supported Tinubu’s presidential ambition while simultaneously backing their own candidates for other elective positions under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Wike noted that despite Tinubu winning Rivers State in the presidential election, PDP candidates secured numerous legislative and state positions in the state.

Wike asserted that Nigerian voters have demonstrated their capacity to vote differently across various levels of elections, dismissing the notion that it is unusual for politicians to support a presidential candidate while remaining loyal to their parties for other elections. He questioned the logic of assuming voters would be confused when instructed to support Tinubu for president but other candidates for legislative roles.

Addressing criticisms, the minister dismissed claims that the Rainbow Coalition was intended to weaken the APC. Instead, he maintained that the initiative's primary goal is to mobilize widespread support for President Tinubu’s re-election. Wike also refuted allegations that President Tinubu had agreed to concede nine states to him or the coalition before the 2027 elections, challenging those making such claims to provide factual evidence rather than speculation. He emphasized his role in promoting the achievements of the Tinubu administration and rallying support for the President based on his performance in office, citing examples such as the Federal Government's support for state police and other reforms as key campaign points for Tinubu’s second term. Wike’s comments highlight the ongoing disagreements between him and some APC governors concerning the Rainbow Coalition, with the PGF reiterating its commitment to supporting Tinubu and all APC candidates in the 2027 elections.
