Botswana Hosts Thrilling Air Race for a Noble Cause

Gaborone is set to host the prestigious Race for the Rhinos Aviation Event at the Makgadikgadi Pans, specifically at Mosu Airfield, from June 26 to 29. This significant four-day event, returning after a seven-year break, is dedicated to raising crucial funds for the relocation of 13 white rhinos, generously donated by South Africa, and for the establishment of a new conservation site within Botswana. The initiative seeks to bolster efforts against poaching and ensure the long-term survival of these vulnerable animals.

The core of the event features a precision air race spanning two days, involving 22 elite aviators piloting 11 registered aircraft. Participants from diverse nations including South Africa, Japan, the United Kingdom, Dubai, and the United States of America will navigate a challenging route that encompasses Nata, Gweta, Orapa, and Kubu Island before returning to Mosu. Arrivals and registration for the event commence today, with the main races scheduled to excite spectators on Saturday and Sunday.

Funds generated from the Race for Rhinos Aviation Weekend are earmarked for the critical first phase of technical and environmental groundwork. This includes comprehensive aerial and ground surveys, detailed route mapping, identification of suitable habitats and campsites, and thorough assessments of cultural and heritage sites throughout the extensive Makgadikgadi Wetland System. Beyond the initial groundwork, the funding will also support the implementation of advanced conservation technologies such as GPS collaring and real-time tracking, the establishment of electrified perimeter fencing, and the vital recruitment and training of dedicated wildlife rangers, all essential for robust rhino protection.

Rebatho Tumagole, Account Director at Incepta Communications, highlighted that the 13 white rhinos originate from South Africa, a nation home to the world's largest white rhino population. Despite their global classification as 'Near Threatened,' white rhino populations in Southern Africa heavily rely on continuous active conservation and protection. In Botswana, rhino numbers remain perilously low and highly vulnerable, primarily due to relentless poaching driven by the illicit trade in rhino horn, which continues to fetch exorbitant prices on international black markets.

Tumagole emphasized that the relocation process for these rhinos has not yet commenced, underscoring the extensive preparations required. Introducing rhinos into a new environment necessitates meticulous ecological planning, robust security arrangements, clear governance structures, and significant community engagement. She passionately asserted that community participation is the most sustainable form of conservation security, explaining that when local communities derive economic benefits from wildlife through tourism, employment, and business opportunities, they naturally become the most effective guardians of that wildlife and its habitats.

The Race for Rhinos operates under the esteemed patronage of former President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama, with the Bamangwato Tribal Administration serving as the project's custodian. Beyond the thrilling air race, visitors will have ample opportunities to enjoy scenic flights over the breathtaking pans, experience tandem paragliding, engage in motorsport activities, and immerse themselves in cultural showcases. This event transcends mere aviation; it signifies the dawn of a new, hopeful chapter for the Makgadikgadi region, Botswana’s overarching conservation narrative, and the local communities whose future is intimately intertwined with this extraordinary and unique landscape.
