Bold Challenge: Adebayo Demands Tinubu Act on Terrorism or Face Resignation Call

The National Electoral Reforms Summit 2025, themed “Critical Constitutional Amendments for Credible Election in 2027,” recently convened in Abuja, bringing together prominent figures to discuss pressing national issues. Organized by the National Consultative Front/Labour and Civil Society Front in collaboration with the Movement for Credible Election, the summit addressed various challenges facing Nigeria, ranging from security to electoral integrity.

Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in 2023, delivered a stern message to President Bola Tinubu concerning the rampant insecurity in the country. Adebayo asserted that President Tinubu must either deploy the full machinery of government to eradicate terrorists or resign honorably. He argued that the ongoing genocide in the country is a direct result of the government's failure to uphold its core responsibility of safeguarding citizens' lives, further alleging that resources earmarked for security are being embezzled. Drawing on personal experiences, Adebayo stated, “We can not deny that certain communities in the country is genocide it is subjected. I donated money to rebuild up to 50 churches. I have comforted over a thousand deaths.” He also recounted meeting with leaders of ethnic groups, including Fulanis, who reported being victims of violence. Adebayo emphasized that the question of genocide is not a matter for governmental debate, asserting that a government that allows its people to die in large numbers has already failed its primary assignment, and the only solutions are for the President to use force or step down.

Representing Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, Muhammed Jamo Yusuf highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive electoral reforms. He pinpointed key issues such as voter apathy, logistical failures during elections, judicial overreach, and the pervasive influence of money and political godfathers in the electoral process. Reflecting on Kano State’s recent experience, Governor Yusuf noted the unprecedented participation of youth in the last election cycle, alongside significant challenges like delays in results transmission and allegations of coalition irregularities. He called upon all summit participants to approach discussions with open minds and strong determination to revitalize Nigeria’s electoral system, expressing hope for positive national change.

Adding a broader perspective, Prof. Okay Ikechukwu, a university Don and political analyst, underscored the critical importance of respecting national interests and thoroughly understanding the intricate dynamics of global politics. He advised against being swayed by sensationalist narratives, stressing the necessity of focusing on practical solutions and fostering cooperation. Prof. Ikechukwu emphasized that tangible actions and significant investments are indispensable for effectively addressing Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges, including insurgency and other security threats. He also highlighted the crucial role of media in shaping public perceptions and disseminating information, advocating for informed and strategic approaches to resolve pressing national issues.
