Bob Odenkirk Reveals Terrifying Near-Death Experience on ‘Better Call Saul’ Set

During a 2021 interview with The Times of London, actor Bob Odenkirk recounted a harrowing experience on the set of his acclaimed drama series, “Better Call Saul.” Odenkirk suffered a severe heart attack while filming, an incident that saw him collapse on set and nearly lose his life. He vividly recalled the moment, stating, “I went down and Rhea [Seehorn] and Patrick [Fabian] grabbed me and they were screaming, but [the crew members who noticed] thought they were laughing.” This initial misinterpretation led to critical delays in response, compounded by the significant distance between the actors and other crew members.

Odenkirk described his condition as dire, noting, “I was gone. I turned gray.” The on-set medic who eventually arrived was unprepared for the emergency, admitting, “He didn’t know what to do. He’d never done CPR.” This highlights a concerning lack of immediate medical expertise available in a critical situation, underscoring the severity of the event and the challenges faced in its initial handling.

Reflecting on the experience, Odenkirk shared that he did not have the common near-death experience of seeing a life reel or being presented with a choice to return. His first conscious memory after the incident was waking up a week later, leaving the hospital. Despite the terrifying nature of the heart attack, Odenkirk expressed a profound sense of gratitude and a renewed appreciation for life. He characterized his recovery period as “such a gift,” explaining, “I felt just very, very delighted and engaged” in the aftermath.

The heart attack, which occurred in July 2021 when Odenkirk was 58 years old, was later attributed to “a build-up of plaque that blocked an artery,” as reported by The Times of London. Following his recovery, Odenkirk made significant lifestyle changes to manage his health, including reducing sugar intake and regularly taking prescribed medications such as statins, aspirin, and metoprolol, a beta-blocker designed to lower blood pressure.

Days after the health scare, Odenkirk personally addressed his fans and the public via social media. On what was then Twitter (now X), he conveyed his heartfelt appreciation, writing, “Hi. It’s Bob. Thank you. To my family and friends who have surrounded me this week. And for the outpouring of love from everyone who expressed concern and care for me. It’s overwhelming. But I feel the love and it means so much.” This public message underscored the immense support he received during a challenging personal time.
