BMW's Electric Revolution: Neue Klasse iX3 Arrives with 500-Mile Range and Qualcomm AI

BMW has officially unveiled the iX3, hailing it as the “first Neue Klasse model to go into series production,” a significant reinvention for the automaker, reminiscent of its original Neue Klasse era in the 1960s. This all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) marks the beginning of a new chapter for BMW, with a comprehensive overhaul in design, architecture, technology, software, and manufacturing. The iX3 50 xDrive, which had its global debut at the 2025 IAA Mobility auto show, is positioned as a high-volume, global car to spearhead this monumental investment.
Under the hood, the iX3 50 xDrive boasts impressive specifications, with 463bhp (or 470 horsepower) and 476lb ft (or 475 lb-ft) of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels via twin motors utilizing BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. This setup allows for a 0-62mph (or 0-60mph) sprint in 4.9 seconds and a limited top speed of 130mph. The vehicle features a substantial 108.7kWh usable battery, employing new cylindrical cells and 800-volt technology, contributing to an estimated WLTP range of up to 500 miles (or 400 miles EPA estimated range). The sixth-generation eDrive technology also promises a 40 percent reduction in energy losses, a 10 percent decrease in weight, and a 20 percent cut in manufacturing costs. Charging capabilities are equally robust, with 400kW fast charging allowing for an additional 231 miles (or 217 miles) of range in just 10 minutes, and a 10-80 percent charge in 21 minutes. The iX3 comes with a NACS port, enabling compatibility with 400-volt Tesla Supercharger networks, and features bidirectional charging, allowing the car to power homes or devices, and even send power to the grid in some regions. An intelligent charging flap, using AI, detects user intent for connection or removal, ensuring a seamless experience.
