Black Stars Revolution: GFA Unveils New Technical Masterminds for 2026 World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), following extensive consultations with key stakeholders, has significantly strengthened the Black Stars’ technical team with the appointment of five experienced professionals. These strategic additions are made in anticipation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to enhance the team’s overall competitiveness and ensure a robust, balanced technical structure as Ghana prepares for the global showpiece to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
French tactician Alain Ravera has been named as an Assistant Coach. Ravera brings extensive international experience to the role, having previously served as an assistant coach with the Guinea national team and the renowned French club AS Monaco. He will be joined by Kim Lars Björkegren, the current head coach of the Black Queens, who also assumes an Assistant Coach position for the Black Stars. Björkegren guided the Black Queens to a bronze medal finish at the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and has successfully led the team to qualification for the 2026 WAFCON, a campaign he will continue to oversee.
To reinforce the team's capabilities in critical areas such as scouting, match preparation, and performance analysis, the GFA has appointed Spanish coach José Daniel Martínez Alfonso. Martínez Alfonso currently serves as an assistant coach and video analyst with Major League Soccer side Atlanta FC, bringing modern analytical expertise to the Black Stars setup. The medical team has also seen a key reinforcement with the return of Carlos Lozano Romero as Team Physiotherapist. Lozano previously worked with the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and his return is expected to provide valuable continuity and familiarity within the medical department.
Completing these vital appointments is British-born Ghanaian performance specialist Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi, who has been designated as the Performance Coach. His responsibilities will focus on physical conditioning, player optimization, and overall performance management throughout the demanding 2026 World Cup campaign. These appointments are strictly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and are consistent with the GFA's long-standing practice of strengthening the technical team whenever Ghana qualifies for major international tournaments. The newly appointed technical members will integrate and collaborate with the existing backroom staff, led by Head Coach Otto Addo, as the Black Stars intensify their preparations for the global tournament.
