Bhangar: No CCTV at spot, witness account to be key

Kolkata: The probe into the murder of TMC Bhangar neta Razzak Khan has hit a roadblock with no CCTV coverage at the spot of the crime, said sources. Police, however, have found two witnesses and information gained from them could be the foundation of the investigation, sources said.

Sketches of the killers have already been made from the witnesses' accounts.Senior police officers, led by Kolkata CP Manoj Verma and detective department chief Rupesh Kumar, have been visiting or camping at Bhangar police station since Thursday night to investigate the murder of 38-year-old Khan, who was TMC's Chaltaberia area president. The two witnesses have been detained for interrogation and the detective department is likely to take over the probe, said sources."The murder spot — barely 1km from Bhangar PS — was chosen with this knowledge that Khan would slow down his bike since the spot was dark," said a source. "I can't share any details since the probe is on," CP Verma told reporters.

"Usually, Razzak returns by 7.30pm. But he had multiple meetings on Thursday, till 9.30pm. I am not sure who the assailants were. It could be due to political rivalry," the victim's brother, Ishaque Khan, said.

Khan had switched allegiance from Arabul Islam and was considered close to Canning East MLA Saokat Molla, who said ISF was behind Khan's murder. "ISF had a lead of 8,000-9,000 in the last assembly elections from Bhangar. Now, many voters are shifting to TMC and ISF is losing base. Hence the attack," claimed Molla.Bhangar MLA and ISF chief Nawsad Siddique rubbished the charges. "Trinamool is trying to portray this as the result of a political rivalry between ISF and TMC, but it's not. I will stand with the family and even seek a CBI probe," said Siddique, adding that the murder was result of TMC's factional rivalry.State cabinet minister Shashi Panja denied there was any intra-party rivalry.
