Behind The Scenes Series(Part 2): Jade Osiberu, The Force Behind "Brotherhood"

Lighting the Way: The Transformative Journey of Jade Osiberu
There are people who dream, and there are those who dare. Then, there are a rare few who do both—fearlessly. Jade Osiberu is one of them. In the fast-moving lanes of Nigeria’s tech and media spaces, her story stands out not just as a tale of success but as a beacon of bold reinvention. Born into a royal family in Ibadan on August 18, 1985, she could have chosen a comfortable, conventional path. Instead, she chose purpose.
From Engineering to Expression: A Bold Career Shift
Armed with a degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Manchester, Osiberu began her professional life as a software developer. It was a logical, stable career—yet something inside her remained restless. There was a burning need to tell stories. African stories. Real stories. Stories that didn’t beg for validation but demanded visibility.
Leaving behind the security of tech for the volatility of filmmaking wasn’t easy. Nollywood, though vibrant, is a fiercely competitive industry with limited resources and unpredictable structures. But passion often thrives where logic stops. Osiberu’s transition wasn’t just a career change; it was an act of courage.

Her debut feature, Isoken (2017), was more than just a film—it was a breakthrough. It explored themes of love, societal expectations, and interracial relationships in modern Nigeria, striking a universal chord. The film earned her the Best Director award at theAfrica Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a nomination at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, positioning her as a filmmaker with vision and heart.
She followed that success withSugar Rush (2019), a box-office hit, andBrotherhood (2022), which became Nollywood’s highest-grossing film of the year. Then came Gangs of Lagos (2023), the first Nigerian original film on Amazon Prime Video. It marked not just a milestone for her, but for African cinema as a whole.

Building Greoh Studios: Creating More Than Movies
In 2017, Osiberu founded Greoh Studios with a clear mission—to tell authentic African stories with high production value and emotional resonance. In 2022, the studio signed a groundbreaking three-year deal with AmazonPrime Video to produce original scripted series and films. For the first time, African creators had a direct pipeline to a global streaming platform—and Jade was at the forefront.
This wasn’t just a business achievement. It was a cultural shift. Osiberu was helping to rewrite the narrative—not just through her films, but through her leadership and belief in the continent’s creative potential.
Resilience in the Face of Resistance
Every meaningful journey is marked by struggle. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Osiberu has had to navigate skepticism, creative compromises, and systemic challenges. Transitioning from software to cinema was itself a high-risk move. But she pushed forward, using each obstacle as fuel to refine her voice, sharpen her vision, and build a platform not just for herself, but for others.
A Legacy Beyond the Screen
Jade Osiberu is more than a filmmaker—she’s a movement. Her work resonates because it’s rooted in truth. Whether she’s telling stories of family dynamics, urban struggles, or cultural identity, she invites audiences into the heart of contemporary Nigeria—honestly and unapologetically.
Her influence now extends beyond Nollywood. Recognized as one of the “40 Most Powerful Women in International Film” by The Hollywood Reporter in 2024, she stands beside global heavyweights—not as an exception, but as an equal. With upcoming projects like Christmas in Lagos and Everything Scatter, she continues to expand Nollywood’s boundaries while inspiring a new generation of storytellers.
In 2023, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in a statement said it extended invitations to 398 artistes and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to motion pictures, Jade Osiberu was one of them
