Published 3 weeks ago2 minute read

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has unveiled a list of candidates for the domestic postgraduate scholarship programme, promising a merit-based consideration.

Besides, he cautioned those entrusted with the screening and selection process to execute the assignment without compromise, adding that the motive was to provide a platform for the best candidates.

Declaring the exercise open at Bayero University Kano yesterday, the lawmaker said the programme was to fund 300 indigenes seeking to pursue MSc programmes in Artificial Intelligence and related programmes in selected Nigerian universities.

Though the ranking senator, who doubles as First Deputy Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, recently sponsored 1,001 Kano indigenes on the foreign postgraduate programme, he explained that the domestic scholarship was to widen opportunities to those who could not secure foreign trips.

The representative of Kano North Senatorial District submitted that the education funding system in the country required the support of individuals to complement government efforts.

“We are committed to our pursuit to bring education development to Kano, and by extension, Nigeria, because we believe education is the bedrock of every society. Hence, to build sound and effective education in Nigeria, we all have the responsibility to support the government to achieve the task,” he said.

BUK’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, applauded the initiative tailored towards building human and capital development in Kano.  He affirmed that apart from the scholarship programme, Barau has contributed in other ways to intellectual development in the university, reassuring the institution’s readiness to support the philanthropic stride.

Chief of Staff to the Deputy Senate President, Prof. Mohammed bin Abdullah, disclosed that the domestic scholarship would accommodate 300 candidates to pursue MSc programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Robotics technology, Software Technology, Geophysics, Metal and Material Technology, and Oil Exploration.
