Former African champions South Africa, known as Banyana Banyana, have successfully secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso. The crucial Group B fixture took place on Tuesday evening at the Rashid Moulay Stadium, where Thembi Kgatlana’s first-half strike proved to be the decisive moment, earning all three points for Desiree Ellis’ charges.

South Africa entered the match in desperate need of a win, sitting at the bottom of Group B with just a single point from their opening two matches, having lost to Tanzania and drawn with Ivory Coast. This victory was essential not only for their progression but also because CAF's tie-breaking rules prioritize head-to-head records when teams are level on points, making the outcome of the Ivory Coast versus Tanzania match also significant for their final group standing.

Burkina Faso made a brighter start to the encounter and nearly took an early lead when Alimata Belem found herself in a promising position. However, her hesitation allowed the South African goalkeeper to recover and gather the ball, preventing an early setback for Banyana Banyana. A well-worked move involving Fikile Magama culminated in an intelligent delivery that found Thembi Kgatlana, who calmly tapped home from close range to give the former champions the lead. Kgatlana continued to pose a threat, almost doubling South Africa’s advantage in the 30th minute after a clever set-piece routine orchestrated by Refilwe Jane, but her shot from inside the area sailed just over the crossbar.
