Avatar Shocker! 'Avengers' Star Nearly Landed Sam Worthington's Iconic Role, Cameron Reveals!

Director James Cameron has shed light on the rigorous casting process for his monumental film, Avatar, revealing that while Matt Damon famously turned down the lead role, the final decision for Jake Sully came down to three promising young actors, with Sam Worthington being the studio's least favored choice. In an interview, Cameron recounted the battle he waged to secure Worthington for the role, emphasizing his unique intensity.
Zoë Saldaña was the first actor cast, chosen for her trained ballet background, which provided the requisite physicality, and her profound emotional range, essential for portraying Neytiri. Cameron, however, noted that Worthington's "thick Australian accent" required some refinement. The director tested various actors, including Worthington, alongside Saldaña in elaborate jungle and lab sets. It was Worthington's captivating intensity that ultimately convinced Cameron he was the perfect fit for Jake Sully.
Among the other contenders vying for the role was Channing Tatum, whom the studio strongly supported. Cameron jokingly remarked that Tatum's career blossomed regardless of not starring in Avatar. This casting saga highlights Cameron's steadfast vision, even when it diverged from studio preferences. Matt Damon had previously disclosed that declining Avatar likely cost him an astonishing $250 million in back-end profits, a testament to the film's unprecedented success.
Released on December 15, 2009, Avatar shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film in history with a global haul approaching $3 billion. The narrative follows a paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission, who ultimately becomes conflicted between his military orders and his growing desire to protect the world he comes to consider home. Worthington and Saldaña reprised their iconic roles in the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, and are set to return for the upcoming third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash. Further sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are also planned.
The film's creative team included James Cameron as director and writer, with Jon Landau serving as producer. The acclaimed cast featured Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoë Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, bringing to life an epic tale spanning Action, Adventure, Fantasy, and Science Fiction genres with a runtime of 162 minutes.
