ASUU Strikes Back: Patience Wears Thin, Protests Loom as Tinubu Intervenes in Lingering Demands

University lecturers across Nigeria, under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), staged peaceful protests on Tuesday, issuing a stern warning that public universities in the nation could face another total shutdown. Their collective message highlighted the Federal Government's perceived failure to meet long-standing demands, echoing a familiar tension in the country's higher education sector. Protests were observed in various institutions, including the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, Federal University of Technology Minna (FUT Minna), Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), University of Ibadan (UI), Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUE) in Oyo State, and Federal University Lokoja.
ASUU officials at these branches articulated a range of unresolved issues. Professor Idou Keinde, UNILAG ASUU chairman, accused the government of deliberate neglect, citing the non-conclusion of the 2009 agreement renegotiation, lack of revitalisation funds, unpaid salaries, and unremitted deductions.
