ASUU Fury: Universities Brace for Total Strike Amidst Mounting Demands

University lecturers across Nigeria, under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), staged peaceful protests on Tuesday, warning of a potential total shutdown of public universities if the Federal Government fails to address their long-standing demands. Protests took place at various institutions, including the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, Federal University of Technology Minna (FUT Minna) in Niger State, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), University of Ibadan (UI) and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUE) in Oyo State, and the Federal University in Lokoja.
ASUU’s core demands revolve around the conclusion of the 2009 agreement renegotiation, the provision of revitalisation funds, payment of withheld salaries and unremitted deductions, and the resolution of promotion arrears. Branch chairmen highlighted various grievances: Professor Idou Keinde of UNILAG accused the government of deliberate neglect, while Dr. Angulu Haruna of ATBU expressed lecturers' weariness with government deception, specifically calling for payment of three and a half months' withheld salaries and four years of promotion arrears. He also rejected the Tertiary Institutions Students Support Fund (TISSF) loan scheme, seeing it as a diversion from sustainable university funding.
Professor Lukman Oyewobi of FUT Minna lamented that Nigerian professors are among the lowest paid in Africa, earning less than $350 monthly, and criticized government delay tactics. Professor Pius Mogaji of FUTA noted that the report of the Yayale Ahmed-led renegotiation panel, submitted in February, had been ignored for over five months.
