Aston Villa's Legal Battle: Club Fights for Teen Star Brian Madjo's Eligibility

Aston Villa has launched an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in an effort to overturn a FIFA block that is currently preventing the club from registering its 17-year-old forward, Brian Madjo. Villa acquired Madjo's contract from French club Metz in January for a reported €12 million ($13.6 million), but has been unable to field him since.

The root of the issue lies in FIFA's stringent transfer regulations, which impose limitations on international moves for players under the age of 18. Madjo, who is north London-born and previously represented Luxembourg at under-17 level before switching allegiance to England's under-17 squad, will not turn 18 until January next year. He last played a competitive game in December for Metz in Ligue 1.

While FIFA rules do allow for certain exemptions, such as a 16- or 17-year-old moving "within the territory of the European Union," this particular clause does not apply to Madjo's situation as Britain is no longer a member of the EU. This regulatory hurdle has created a significant challenge for Aston Villa, especially with critical squad registration deadlines fast approaching. The club is set to play in the Champions League next season, with the UEFA deadline for squad lists on September 2, followed by the Premier League deadline after the transfer window closes on September 1.

CAS confirmed that Aston Villa's appeal hearing proceeded as scheduled, though no specific target date for a ruling has been provided. The club eagerly awaits a decision that could allow their new talent to participate in the upcoming season.
