The Thai-Cambodian border conflict remains a complex and persistent issue, characterized by territorial disputes, alleged ceasefire violations, and a significant disinformation campaign. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts and bilateral mechanisms, tensions continue to escalate, fueled by mutual accusations and public relations battles. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has firmly rejected various allegations, while the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has highlighted the prevalence of fake news related to the border situation.
A primary point of contention revolves around the Ban Nong Chan village in Sa Kaeo province. Thailand accuses Cambodians, who initially sought temporary shelter from civil war in 1977, of encroaching on Thai soil and expanding their community, exploiting Thailand's humanitarian aid. Thailand asserts that it has erected razor wire fences entirely within its boundaries to protect its territory from further encroachment and attacks by Cambodian troops.
