Apple Announces Layoffs in Corporate Retail Teams Amid Economic Pressures

Apple is cutting positions within its corporate retail development and preservation teams, marking its first major workforce reduction since the COVID-19 boom. The move targets staff responsible for constructing and maintaining the company’s global retail infrastructure.
CEO Tim Cook confirmed that these layoffs are part of broader spending recalibrations, with affected employees offered severance and opportunities to reapply for similar roles.
Apple emphasizes operational efficiency while continuing to support impacted staff.
This downsizing coincides with broader tech sector cuts, following pandemic-era expansion.
Apple had increased its workforce by roughly 20% in 2020, a measured pace compared to peers like Amazon and Google who later announced tens of thousands of layoffs, helping Apple mitigate more widespread reductions.
Strategic reorganizations are also underway, including a greater focus on the Indian market. India is now a standalone sales region, with Asish Chowdhary replacing Hugues Asseman as regional lead, reflecting Apple’s forward-looking approach to global growth.
