AP braces for thunderstorms as IMD sounds statewide alert

Visakhapatnam: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm warning in parts of the north coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, south coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema regions for the next five days (till July 3).

According to IMD's latest bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely to occur in isolated places in all the 26 districts in the state from June 30 to July 3. Additionally, strong surface winds with speeds of about 40-50 kmph are likely to occur in isolated places in all the districts of the state.The weather agency mentioned that east-west trough now runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation over south Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat to the cyclonic circulation associated with the Low Pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts across Madhya Pradesh, north Chhattisgarh and north Odisha.

Lower tropospheric Westerly winds prevail over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.As per the IMD, rainfall occurred at few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and few places over Rayalaseema between Saturday morning and Sunday morning. Vepada in Vizianagaram district and Paderu in ASR district recorded 3 cm rainfall each during the period, followed by 2 cm rainfall each in Araku valley and Chintapalli (ASR), Salur (Manyam), Merakamudidam and Vizianagaram town (Vizianagaram dist). Few parts of the NCAP and Rayalaseema regions recorded one cm of rainfall.
