Producer Shoko Hori, in an interview with Collider, elaborated on how this anime adaptation of Saka Mikami’s manga actively rebels against societal expectations, silence, and judgment, presenting a love story that is anything but gentle in its profound social commentary. While initially appearing as a typical high school romance, the series quickly draws viewers in with its characters’ struggles, friendships, and their navigation of discrimination and social pressures in their quest for genuine connections.

Shoko Hori emphasized that the core appeal of the original manga, and what the anime sought to amplify, was not solely its love story but its delicate and thoughtful portrayal of how individuals forge relationships. She described the series’ distinctively soft, warm atmosphere and its “kind and gentle world” as a deliberate creation by its characters. This kindness, Hori clarified, stems not from inherent nature but from a remarkable capacity for empathy and the courageous expression of feelings through sincere communication. The production process involved close collaboration with the original author, Saka Mikami-sensei, though not through direct requests.
