Anfield Upset: Forest Humiliates Liverpool, Slot Defends Squad
)
Liverpool's season of 'abject misery' continued as they suffered their sixth loss in just 12 matches, culminating in an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Anfield against a resurgent Nottingham Forest side. The Reds, under head coach Arne Slot, were hoping to recover from a previous heavy loss at Manchester City but instead faced a revitalized Forest, who appeared to be back to their best under new manager Sean Dyche.
The match saw Nottingham Forest take the lead after 33 minutes when defender Murillo powerfully shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, subduing an already anxious Anfield crowd. While Igor Jesus had a second goal ruled out for handball, Forest quickly doubled their advantage just 47 seconds after the break. Former Liverpool defender Neco Williams set up Nicola Savona for a crisp finish in front of The Kop, further compounding Liverpool's woes. The home side struggled to mount a meaningful response, and Forest sealed their dominant victory 12 minutes from time when Morgan Gibbs-White scored, following Alisson's save from Omari Hutchinson.
This latest defeat means Liverpool has now lost six of their past seven Premier League games, putting Arne Slot's nearly £450 million summer spending spree under intense scrutiny. British record signing Alexander Isak, who started for Liverpool, remained anonymous throughout the match and was substituted after 67 minutes.
Despite the crushing defeat, Liverpool boss Arne Slot believes his side is 'close to cracking the code' and that the 'end is in sight for their struggles'. The Dutch tactician acknowledged positives in certain parts of the game, stating, “The first half hour, I think the players did what I was hoping for. Played with energy and created chances to go a goal up.” He also dismissed suggestions of low player confidence, citing the chances they created. Slot reflected on the turning point: “The set piece changed the momentum and the goal. I tried to make a couple of changes and adjustments but they didn't work out the way I wanted. It's always my responsibility.”
Slot noted the team's struggle after conceding the first goal: “After we go 1-0, we struggled. I tried to pump them up and give them the information to start the second half well. Immediately, they go 2-0 up. The players kept trying, I can't blame them for that. They blocked every shot we had.” He maintained a sense of optimism about finding a solution, emphasizing, "The solution is not that far away. We created chances in every and it's not as if we give away 10 chances. That will not go on forever but we have to look at ourselves and what we can do better when we concede a goal. Two games in a row, we haven't scored." Despite his hopeful outlook, the continued string of losses highlights the significant challenges Slot faces in turning Liverpool's season around.
