Anambra Dismisses Vigilante Operatives Following Assault on NYSC Member

Incident Draws Public Outcry After Viral Video
The Anambra State Government has dismissed eight vigilante operatives following their involvement in the assault and public humiliation of Miss Edema Jennifer Elobor, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The incident occurred on July 23 in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, and gained widespread attention after a video of the incident surfaced online on August 19, prompting public condemnation.
Operatives Removed and Handed to Police
On August 20, Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, confirmed the dismissal of the personnel, who were part of Operation Udo Ga-Achi (also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group). He said the individuals involved had acted outside the scope of their duties, despite claims they were pursuing suspected cult members.
Emeakayi reiterated the state’s policy that any security operative found engaging in misconduct would face disciplinary and legal consequences.
Legal Counsel Outlines Victim’s Account
Cyrus Onu, legal representative for Ms. Elobor, said the operatives—in plain clothes and wearing masks—entered the NYSC lodge without formal identification, accusing residents of internet fraud. According to Onu, when Ms. Elobor asked to contact her Local Government Inspector (LGI) before cooperating, she was physically assaulted, her clothing was forcibly removed, and threats were made against her and others at the lodge.
State Assumes Responsibility for Victim Support
Following the incident, the Anambra State Government provided a series of support measures for the victim, including:
Payment of medical expenses
Replacement of personal items, including a laptop and mobile phone
A formal public apology to the victim, her family, and the NYSC
Public officials, including Nonye Soludo and NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu, condemned the conduct of the vigilante group and emphasized the importance of professionalism and respect for human rights in community security operations.
Nigerian Bar Association Calls for Accountability
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) released a statement on August 19, describing the assault as a violation of fundamental human rights. The association urged that all those responsible be prosecuted promptly and stressed the importance of ongoing oversight and reform of non-state security actors.
The NBA also called for enhanced training programs for local security personnel to ensure compliance with legal standards, emphasizing the need for restraint, due process, and dignity in all enforcement actions.
The association's Anambra branches, alongside its National Litigation Committee, have been tasked with monitoring the legal proceedings related to the case to help ensure that due process is followed.
