Anakin Returns! ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 Trailer Drops with Official Release Date!

The year 2026 has brought a mix of triumphs and challenges for Star Wars enthusiasts, marking a period of significant developments across the franchise's animated and live-action projects. Fans witnessed both groundbreaking successes and notable setbacks, setting the stage for an intriguing future.

Among the highlights, the animated series Maul — Shadow Lord achieved critical acclaim, becoming the highest-rated project in Star Wars franchise history. Its widespread success led to an early Season 2 renewal, with leading star Sam Witwer confirming that fans would not have to wait long for its return, promising more destruction, doom, and double-bladed lightsabers.

However, the franchise's return to cinemas with The Mandalorian and Grogu faced a different fate. The film concluded its theatrical run as the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie in history. Despite its box office performance, anticipation remains high for its streaming debut on Disney+, where it is expected to be one of the biggest streaming launches, building on the immense popularity of the first three seasons of The Mandalorian.

While Star Wars had a limited presence at San Diego Comic-Con, D23 brought forth a flurry of exciting announcements. A significant update concerned the second season of Ahsoka, which, after an initial schedule for late 2026, has been officially delayed to 2027. Disney confirmed via a spotted poster that the Rosario Dawson-led series will begin streaming on January 20, 2027.

The upcoming season of Ahsoka introduces a new cast member, with Game of Thrones legend Rory McCann joining to portray Baylan Skoll, taking over the role from the late Ray Stevenson, who played the character in the first season. Rosario Dawson will return as Ahsoka Tano, marking her fourth live-action appearance in the Star Wars universe, having previously appeared in The Mandalorian Season 2 episode “The Jedi,” and later in The Book of Boba Fett in a memorable encounter with Luke Skywalker, before leading the first season of her standalone series.

Season 1 of Ahsoka followed Ahsoka Tano, former apprentice of Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christiansen), as she pursued her lost ally Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi), who had vanished during a confrontation with Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). Alongside her compatriots, pilot Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Ahsoka tracked them to the distant planet Peridea, outside the known galaxy. Although Ezra was found, Thrawn successfully escaped Peridea with him stowed away on his flagship, leaving Ahsoka and Sabine stranded.

The trailer for Season 2 teases a continuation of the intense struggle against Thrawn, who has returned to the main galaxy and declared war against what is termed “the Rebel Alliance” (implying the New Republic). Thrawn’s forces are bolstered not only by Imperial military might but also by the formidable Nightsisters. Meanwhile, Ahsoka and Sabine, potentially guided by the spirit of Anakin Skywalker, may have uncovered ancient secrets of the Force on Peridea. The roles of Baylan Skoll and his apprentice Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) also remain pivotal, presenting a wild card in the unfolding conflict.

Beyond these series, the Star Wars slate includes other promising projects. In addition to the returning Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2, the film Star Wars: Starfighter is slated for theaters next summer, starring Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth, under the direction of Shawn Levy.
