Alarming rise in level of twin rivers, bathing ghats inundated

Prayagraj: There is an alarming rise in water level of the twin rivers, Ganga and Yamuna, as it crossed the 80.26-metre mark by Monday evening. Though the river is flowing about 3 metres below the warning level of 84.734 metres, it inundated most ghats.

The threat of flooding in low-lying areas has also increased. After maintaining an upward trend for the past 24 hours, the twin rivers, Ganga and Yamuna, continued to swell at 20 cm, 12 cm and 7 cm at Phaphamau, Chhatnag and Naini respectively in the past four hours on Monday evening. The rising water level has already inundated major bathing ghats, Ganga Path and touched the boundaries of the Lord Hanuman corridor. At Naini, the Yamuna's water level was recorded as 80.97 metres.

At 4 pm on Monday, the Ganga's water level rose to 80.81 metres during the 4-hour period at Phaphamau. At Chhatnag, the river swelled to 80.26 metres during the same period. The danger mark for both the Ganga and Yamuna is at 84.73 metres.

Locals claimed that floodwater engulfed the entire Ganga Path areas, and local teerth purohits shifted themselves to safer places. A senior official said, "Preventive measures are being initiated in view of the rising water level of the twin rivers, and SDM/Tehsildars concerned have been instructed to take measures accordingly."
