An Air Peace Boeing 737 operating flight P47190 from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos to Port Harcourt International Airport came to rest on a part of runway 07 that had settled on Saturday 13th, 2025. Luckily no injuries were reported and all of the passengers were able to safely evacuate from the plane. The development happened when the aircraft was trying to land on Runway 22 of Port Harcourt International Airport and veered off the runway onto the side of the Runway in the process.
Despite the scary incident, it should be mentioned that the plane did not incur any meaningful damage. And the quick work of the staff and speedy emergency drills meant no one was hurt. The travellers said they were frightened but they praised the flight crew for its professionalism and composure.
The runway excursion took place in the early hours of the morning when Flight P47190, which had departed from Lagos at approximately 6:30 AM, was making its descent into Port Harcourt International Airport. Shortly after landing, the aircraft veered slightly off the runway. Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft was not significantly off course, and the crew promptly engaged the aircraft’s emergency protocols.
Port Harcourt International Airport officials were quick to respond to the situation, and emergency teams were on standby, ensuring the aircraft and passengers were taken care of. Fortunately, the situation did not escalate into a serious emergency, thanks to the efforts of the flight crew and ground staff. Passengers were able to safely exit the aircraft, and the incident was classified as a minor runway excursion.
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737, one of the most widely used aircraft models for short- and medium-haul flights. The Boeing 737 is known for its reliability and safety record, and this minor incident does not reflect on the aircraft’s overall safety performance.
Following the incident, Air Peace issued a statement reassuring the public about the safety and well-being of their passengers. The airline emphasized that all necessary safety measures were implemented and that the airline remained committed to upholding the highest safety standards in its operations.
A spokesperson for Air Peace, Osifo-Whiskey Efe, confirmed that there were no injuries to passengers or crew members on board. In a statement, Efe said, “We can confirm that our flight P47190 from Lagos to Port Harcourt experienced a minor runway excursion. We assure the public that all passengers were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported. Our crew handled the situation professionally, and we are currently working with the relevant authorities to understand the cause of the incident.”
Air Peace also extended gratitude to the Port Harcourt International Airport emergency response team for their quick reaction and for ensuring a smooth and swift evacuation.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the runway excursion to understand the cause of the incident. The NCAA is responsible for overseeing aviation safety in Nigeria, and it is standard procedure for them to investigate any significant events that occur during aviation operations, including runway excursions.
As is typical in these cases, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), which oversees airport operations across the country, is also expected to be involved in the investigation, particularly to assess the condition of the runway and related airport infrastructure at Port Harcourt International Airport.
Both the NCAA and FAAN are working with Air Peace to gather information about the incident. The investigation will likely focus on potential contributing factors, such as weather conditions, airport infrastructure, or technical issues with the aircraft itself. Once the investigation is complete, the agencies will provide a comprehensive report, which will guide any necessary safety improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Incidents like these highlight the importance of maintaining high safety standards in Nigeria’s aviation sector. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has consistently emphasized the importance of adhering to stringent safety measures, including pilot training, aircraft maintenance, and operational procedures. The NCAA regularly conducts safety audits and ensures that all airlines operating in Nigeria comply with international aviation standards.
Nigeria’s aviation safety record has improved significantly in recent years, and the country continues to invest in its aviation infrastructure and regulatory oversight to ensure that passenger safety remains a priority.
For , this incident may have some short-term implications on the airline’s reputation, but it is important to note that no injuries were sustained by passengers or crew members. The airline has built a strong reputation in the Nigerian aviation sector and remains a significant player in regional and domestic air travel.
The incident is unlikely to have a long-term effect on the airline’s operations, as it appears to have been a minor event that was effectively handled. The airline’s commitment to safety and professionalism in dealing with the situation will likely reinforce its standing in the Nigerian aviation industry.
In conclusion, the runway excursion involving Air Peace Flight P47190 serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of aviation. While the incident caused momentary concern among passengers, the professionalism of the flight crew and the swift response from airport and emergency personnel ensured that the situation did not escalate.
As investigations continue, Air Peace, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will work together to understand the cause and improve safety measures. For now, the airline’s passengers can rest assured that the incident was minor, and no injuries were sustained. The Nigerian aviation industry continues to prioritize passenger safety, with ongoing efforts to maintain the highest safety standards across the sector.
