AI Takes Over WordPress With Bots Now Crafting and Publishing Content

WordPress, a prominent web hosting platform owned by Automattic, has announced a major integration of AI agents, an advancement poised to fundamentally reshape how websites are created and managed.

This new capability allows AI agents to draft, edit, and publish content on user websites while also handling tasks such as moderating comments, updating metadata, and organizing posts with tags and categories.

Through a natural language interface, users can simply describe what they want, and the AI executes those instructions, significantly lowering the technical barrier to building and maintaining a site.

This shift introduces a new paradigm where websites can be largely conceptualized and maintained by AI under human supervision.

Given that WordPress powers over 43% of all websites globally, the implications are substantial, even though WordPress.com itself represents a smaller segment, it still attracts over 20 billion page views and 409 million unique visitors monthly.

While the innovation promises efficiency and accessibility, it also raises critical concerns about an internet increasingly populated by machine-generated content rather than human-authored material.

These enhanced capabilities build on the earlier introduction of Model Context Protocol (MCP), a framework designed to provide contextual awareness to large language models (LLMs).

Previously, MCP allowed integrations with AI tools like Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Visual Studio Code, enabling users to analyze site content, settings, and analytics.

With the latest update, AI agents can now move beyond passive analysis to active creation, posts, landing pages, and About sections while also restructuring site architecture and optimizing SEO elements such as alt text, captions, and titles.

All actions are recorded in the Activity Log, ensuring transparency and user oversight.

To maintain control, WordPress.com ensures that all AI-generated content is saved as drafts by default and requires user approval before publication.

Users can either provide drafts for AI to refine or instruct the system to generate content from scratch, complete with categorization and metadata.

The AI also analyzes the site’s existing design to maintain visual consistency in layout, fonts, and spacing.

Activation requires enabling features via the MCP settings and connecting an AI client like ChatGPT.

While this innovation dramatically accelerates website development, it also echoes broader industry trends, such as experiments by Anthropic and acquisitions by Meta, signaling a future where AI not only assists but actively participates in digital content ecosystems.
