AI Showdown: Perplexity CEO Defies Amazon's Legal Notice on Comet AI

AI startup Perplexity has entered a legal confrontation with e-commerce giant Amazon, following a notice seeking to block users of Perplexity’s AI-powered web browser, Comet, from using their assistants on Amazon’s platform. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas emphasized the company’s commitment to collaborate but firmly stated they would not permit attempts to block Comet or restrict user functionality, vowing to "stand up for them and not get bullied by Amazon."
The dispute originated from what Perplexity described in a blog post on November 4 as an "aggressive legal threat" from Amazon. Perplexity framed the action as Amazon’s first legal challenge against an AI company, warning it could pose a "threat to all internet users." The AI startup stressed that the Comet Assistant streamlines shopping experiences, allowing users to locate, compare, and purchase products on Amazon efficiently, with credentials stored solely on the user’s device.
Perplexity further accused Amazon of attempting to "eliminate user rights" to safeguard its advertising revenue and future AI partnerships. The startup denounced the tactics as "not just bullying, it’s bonkers," and reaffirmed its focus on user choice, freedom, and rights. Perplexity argued that its dedication to user-centric AI design may have made it a target for corporate pressure.
In a pointed message, Perplexity reminded Amazon of its own past challenges, highlighting how the company once faced threats yet fought to expand user options. This comparison suggested a double standard in Amazon’s approach toward smaller, innovative companies like Perplexity, underlining the startup’s commitment to standing firm against attempts to restrict AI-driven services.
