AI Resurrects Charlie Kirk, Igniting a New Era of Digital Grief
Following the assassination of conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk, an unprecedented wave of artificial intelligence-generated content has emerged, reshaping public mourning and remembrance. This phenomenon was strikingly demonstrated when Megachurch pastor Jack Graham played an AI-generated audio clip of Kirk speaking from beyond the grave during a Sunday service at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. The clip, which encouraged listeners to “pick up your cross, and get back in the fight,” prompted a standing ovation from the congregation, despite Graham clarifying its AI origin. Similar scenes unfolded at Dream City Church in Arizona and Awaken Church, San Marcos in California, indicating a broader adoption of this digital form of commemoration.
The surge of AI-generated images, videos, and audio messages featuring the felled activist flooded social media within hours of his death. This new form of grief leverages hyperreal, yet entirely fictional, reconstructions crafted rapidly by AI services. Many of these digital creations incorporated religious themes, reflecting Kirk’s late-life shift towards evangelical Christianity. Common depictions included Kirk imagining himself in heaven, often stating, “My faith cost me my life, but now I stand forever in glory,” and introducing AI-generated Christian martyrs like Paul and Stephen. Other clips showed Kirk embracing Jesus Christ, praying on a park bench with Scripture, or even walking with Jesus among the clouds, holding a “Make America Great Again” hat.
Beyond religious imagery, some AI-generated content placed Kirk alongside assassinated American historical figures such as Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., taking selfies in a cloudy vista as “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” played. This utilization of AI for commemoration appears to be an outgrowth of the technology’s widespread use among supporters of President Donald Trump, a movement with which Kirk was deeply associated. Technology and media writer Charlie Warzel noted how the
