Mississippi Law School Becomes One of First in US to Make AI Education Mandatory

Mississippi College School of Law has become one of the first law schools in the US and the first in the Southeast, to make AI education mandatory for all first-year students.

The two-day course, taught by AI educator Oliver Roberts, covers tools like Westlaw AI, ethical guidelines, and real-world regulatory issues.

The push follows alarming incidents, including a federal judge in Mississippi admitting his staff used AI to draft a court order riddled with errors, and a lawyer fined $20,000 for improper AI use in filings.

Students used AI to build legal prototypes — including tools for jury selection, bias detection, and automated billing.

MC Law also launched the Center for AI Policy and Technology Leadership, a joint initiative between its business and law schools.
