When it first broke cover, Slate Auto was making plenty of noise about its new electric pickup truck being a back-to-basics hero with no paint, no infotainment and wind-up windows. It would also get a single electric motor and a 52.7kWh battery for 150 miles of range.

Now, all of that is still very much the case, but one crucial detail has changed. You see, the truck was supposed to start at below $20,000, but the website has now been updated to share the news that prices will actually start in the “mid-twenties”. And that’s before you start adding accessories, custom wraps, different bodystyles, alloy wheels or a bigger battery. Uh oh, this thing could get pricey.

Of course, the change comes after the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' was signed into law by President Trump. Among many other things, this will see America’s ‘clean vehicle credit’ removed on 30 September this year, meaning all EVs could shoot up in price by as much as $7,500.
