Following violent incidents during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate, has paid courtesy visits to Mavis Hawa Koomson, the former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, and Nana Akua Afriyie, the NPP's parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North. Hawa Koomson announced the visit on her social media page, saying that Dr. Bawumia and his crew visited her home to see how she was doing following what she called a "brutal assault by thugs." She shared pictures from the visit along with the message, "My family and I are extremely grateful for this thoughtful gesture." Koomson, Hawa Dr. Bawumia and his colleagues were also welcomed by Nana Akua Afriyie. In the face of escalating tensions in the constituency, they advocated party unity and offered support.
There have been sporadic acts of violence and elevated tensions during the Ablekuma North rerun. Social media footage and eyewitness reports claim that anonymous males thought to be from opposing party parties attacked Hawa Koomson. Although the specifics of the attacks are still unknown, political analysts and civil society organizations have strongly condemned them, expressing alarm about the rise in political violence and the dangers to democratic processes. The visits by Dr. Bawumia are seen as a powerful demonstration of support and a reminder of the importance of safe and tranquil election conditions. Security agencies have been urged by civil society organizations to step up their investigations into the violence that was witnessed at Ablekuma North and to make sure that those responsible are apprehended as soon as possible.
