According to Ghana's Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is presently the focus of a significant criminal investigation involving claims of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. Mr. Srem-Sai stated in a tweet on his official X (formerly Twitter) account that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is in charge of the investigation and that attempts are already being made to retrieve assets thought to be connected to illegal conduct. The Deputy Attorney General said, "Suspect Bernard Antwi Boasiak, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is being investigated for a number of criminal offenses, including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering." He added that there are two lines of inquiry in the case: one that focuses on domestic offenses and another that is more intricate and connected to a global organized crime organization.
As part of a broader global organized crime plot, the suspect is also the subject of a second line of inquiry. On this second line of criminal investigations, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is diligently collaborating with our foreign law enforcement partners," Mr. Srem-Sai disclosed. Asset recovery procedures have been started in conjunction with the criminal investigation, the Deputy Attorney General emphasized, "to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime." This public statement confirms rumors about the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman and represents the most straightforward and unambiguous government communication on the subject to date.
